Spurfield House is CoActive Care’s newest home, located in the village of Exminster, just outside Exeter.
Bringing together over 35 years of experience in complex care, the service has been designed around wellbeing, independence and progression, creating an environment that feels calm, considered and suited to the different needs of the people who live there.
Furncare supplied the bedroom and dining furniture throughout the project, helping to create practical, considered interiors suited to the different ways residents live, socialise and build greater independence.
A home designed around different needs
Spurfield House combines a restored Grade II listed building with purpose-built accommodation, creating 24 bedrooms across three distinct areas.
The Main House retains the character of the original building, with a combination of bedrooms and shared communal spaces, while Meadow Wing provides fully accessible accommodation for individuals with higher physical support needs.
Orchard Wing takes a more independent approach, with self-contained studio apartments designed to give residents greater autonomy while maintaining access to support when needed.
At the centre of the development sits a landscaped courtyard, connecting the different areas of the home and creating an inviting outdoor space.
With each area serving a different purpose, the furniture needed to work across a varied environment while contributing to a consistent, considered feel throughout the development.
Bedrooms to support everyday living
Bedroom furniture supplied by Furncare was used throughout the accommodation, creating spaces that feel comfortable and personal while meeting the practical demands of a complex care setting.
For residents, bedrooms are more than somewhere to sleep. They provide an important private space within the home, particularly within an environment designed to help individuals develop confidence, establish routines and progress at their own pace.
The furniture was therefore selected to balance durability and practicality with a softer, more residential aesthetic, complementing Spurfield House's modern approach to care.
Creating communal spaces
Alongside the bedrooms, Furncare supplied dining furniture for the communal areas.
Shared dining spaces form an important part of daily life at Spurfield House, providing somewhere for residents to eat, spend time together and develop everyday skills within a supportive environment.
The dining furniture helps create welcoming, functional spaces suited to regular use, while sitting comfortably within the wider interior scheme.
Throughout Spurfield House, the focus extends beyond providing a safe place to live.
Dedicated areas including The Nest, a social hub; The Hive, an activity and learning space; and The Nook, a quieter setting for reflection and support, give residents opportunities to engage with daily life in different ways.
Combined with its landscaped courtyard and close connection to the wider Exminster community, the result is an environment designed to support each individual as they build confidence and move towards greater independence.
For Furncare, the project was about supplying furniture that complemented that vision: practical enough for the demands of complex care, while helping Spurfield House feel considered and welcoming.
By balancing durability, comfort and considered design, the finished interiors support the everyday needs of residents while reflecting Spurfield House’s wider ambition: to create a calm, welcoming environment that encourages confidence, independence and progression.
